History

The pagan Celtic cross is a symbol that has a rich and complex history. It is believed to have originated in pre-Christian times, during the Iron Age in Europe. The cross is a combination of the traditional pagan sun wheel and the Christian cross, which was introduced to the Celts during the early Christian period.

The sun wheel was a symbol of the Celtic god Taranis, who was associated with thunder and lightning. The wheel represented the cyclical nature of life and death, and the four points of the cross represented the four seasons and the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water.

When Christianity was introduced to the Celts, the missionaries incorporated elements of their pagan beliefs into the Christian symbol, creating the Celtic cross. This was done in an effort to make Christianity more appealing to the Celts and to help them understand the new religion in terms of their own beliefs.

Over time, the pagan Celtic cross became a symbol of Celtic identity and culture. It was used in artwork, on gravestones, and as a symbol of national pride. Today, the pagan Celtic cross is still a popular symbol among pagans and those interested in Celtic spirituality. It is often used in rituals, as a decorative element in homes and gardens, and as a way to connect with the ancient traditions of the Celts.
